Quick answer

Teachable has no free plan: you get a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Starter costs $39 a month ($29 billed yearly) for 5 products, but Teachable keeps 7.5% of every sale on it. Builder costs $89 a month ($69 yearly) for 10 products and takes 0% when you use Teachable Payments. On top of either, card processing is 2.9% + $0.30 for a US card. If you sell more than about $670 a month, Builder costs less than Starter.

Is there a free plan?

No. Teachable's pricing FAQ calls it "a paid service that includes a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee". You can cancel at any time; cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing cycle.

Enough for you if you're starting small. Starter includes:

  • up to 5 published products (a course, coaching offer or digital download each counts as 1; memberships, bundles and drafts don't count)
  • iOS and Android student apps
  • global payments and taxes
  • upsells and cart recovery
  • AI course creation tools

Not enough if you need:

  • more than 5 products, an affiliate program or real-time support (Builder and up)
  • certificates, imported students or Teachable branding removed (Growth and up)
  • to keep the 7.5% Starter fee off your sales

A Custom plan is priced by call. Teachable says yearly billing saves 22% compared with monthly.

  • Processing on Teachable Payments (US school): 2.9% + $0.30 for a domestic card and 4.4% + $0.30 for an international card.
  • Extra fees on the default Standard bundle: +0.5% on transactions where tax is assessed and +0.7% on recurring payments. The optional Global bundle adds 2.8% on all transactions and waives those two.
  • Your own Stripe account (Custom Payment Gateway): US schools pay Teachable a 2% integration fee per transaction, plus Stripe's own fees.
  • An example from those numbers: at $1,000 a month in sales, Starter's 7.5% is $75, so Starter costs $114 in total against Builder's $89. The two are equal at about $667 a month in sales.

Catches to know

  • The 7.5% Starter fee is on the full sale price. Teachable's help center says it applies to all sales on Starter, on both Teachable Payments and your own gateway, and it is separate from processing fees (fees and bundles).
  • Product limits are firm by plan. 5 products on Starter and 10 on Builder; the 51st product needs a Custom plan (pricing).
  • Branding and certificates wait until Growth. Both start at $189 a month (pricing).
  • Plan changes bill at the next date. You're charged the new plan amount on your next billing date (pricing FAQ).
